35mm Film Photography

Also called 135 Film Photography · 35 mm film photography

35mm photography uses film 35 millimeters wide, a format carried by portable cameras into journalism, street work, and family life. Its familiar rectangular frames suit quick, consecutive pictures. Grain, color, and highlight behavior depend on stock, exposure, development, and scanning, so the format cannot be reduced to a single nostalgic filter.

Key traits

1. 01Choose color or black-and-white stock and base tonal relationships on that stock and output process.
2. 02Visible grain varies with stock, exposure and enlargement and may be subtle or pronounced.
3. 03Keep highlight, shadow and color responses coherent rather than stacking incompatible film-look cues.
4. 04Common full-frame 35mm still photographs are 3:2, while half-frame formats, cropping and other frame designs can change the ratio.
